The Inaugral Camping Trip.

For the Labour Day long weekend our family headed 4 hours North to Rainbow Beach for our first Australian camping trip. We camped with two other Canadian families on exchange.

We have played on a lot of different beaches and sometimes I think to myself, "Will I get tired of going to the beach?". But it never happens. With each new beach we visit I fall in love with it the moment my feet touch the sand. I now know that each beach has its own character. With Rainbow Beach it was its sheer expanse, miles of sand backed by nothing but the scrub forest of a National Park.

Our friends (who arrived the night before) managed to find a great spot for us to pitch our tent. It felt so exciting to pull the tent out of its bag and get set up to sleep with the sound of waves crashing on the beach and above, a beautiful star-filled sky. The kids, of course, were excited to roast marshmallows over the campfire.

On the first morning the families decided to wake up at the crack of dawn and drive the 45 minutes back into Tin Can Bay so our kids could have an experience of a lifetime. We were off to feed dolphins! It is always hard as parent when your kids have expectations that may not come to fruition, and this was one such time. You can never know with wild animals what they are going to do. The dolphins are wild - wild in the sense that they live in the open river waters but have been known to come early in the morning to be fed by the little hands of children. Also the Beckett/Graham clan were a little behind schedule (the dolphins arrive at 7am and we were on the road at that time). We were crossing our fingers that the dolphins would actually show up and that we wouldn't be too late! Lucky for us, two dolphins decided to come for an easy breakfast and we arrived in plenty of time, as the feeding didn't happen for another hour! So with their $2 fish in bucket the kids lined up to feed the dolphins with hoards of others!

Gemma and Ruben both fed a male dolphin named 'Mystique'. Gemma was a little more hesitant to give the fish to Mystique, fearing that its 58 teeth might take more than a fish.

During the last night it rained unbelievably hard - coming from the west coast of BC we know rain but tropical rain is something completely different. The amount of water that falls from the sky in a short period of time is incredible, and if you happen to get caught out in it you get soaked! Lucky for us our tent survived the torrential downpour. Unfortunately, our camping companions were not so lucky and they woke up in the middle of the night to a lake in their tent.

The last day at Rainbow Beach we went to the Carlo Sandblow - a stunning place where the sand, blown by the wind, is creating a dune that is slowly covering the fringing forest. The views from this area are absolutely stunning! The picture above is the view you get as you step out from the eucalyptus forest onto the dunes. Truly an amazing view! Rainbow Beach is so aptly named for the multicoloured cliffs that are near-by.

Rainbow Beach was a great experience, and we were reminded how much we love to be camping and exploring the natural surroundings. There will be more camping trips to come!

Until next time,
love Heather, Dave, Gemma and Ruben
